History: Constructed in 1950 and opened in 1951, Yorktown Memorial Hospital was established by the Felician Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church to serve the rural community of Yorktown, Texas. The 30,000-square-foot facility featured two wings, a chapel, and a basement, with the second floor serving as living quarters for the staff.
Over its 35 years of operation, the hospital reportedly witnessed approximately 2,000 patient deaths, averaging about one death per week—a significant number for a small-town hospital. In 1986, following the opening of a more modern medical facility in nearby Cuero, Texas, the hospital ceased operations.
It briefly reopened as a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, but this endeavor was short-lived, and the building was permanently closed in the early 1990s. Since then, the abandoned hospital has garnered a reputation for paranormal activity, attracting ghost hunters and thrill-seekers alike.
Hauntings: Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported a wide array of unexplained phenomena within the hospital’s decaying walls:
-
Apparitions: Shadowy figures, believed to be former patients and staff, are frequently observed roaming the hallways. Notably, the spirit of a little girl named “Stacy” is said to interact with visitors, especially when they read her favorite book, “The Poky Little Puppy.”
-
Disembodied Voices and Sounds: Auditory experiences include hearing moans, screams, crying babies, and even organ music emanating from the chapel, despite the absence of any physical source.
-
Physical Interactions: Some guests have reported being touched, pushed, or scratched by unseen forces. Individuals with tattoos have recounted aggressive encounters, possibly linked to the spirits of former nuns who disapproved of body art.
-
Environmental Anomalies: Reports of sudden temperature drops, feelings of unease, and malfunctioning electronic devices are common, particularly in areas like the basement and the former chapel.
Personal Experiences: Numerous paranormal investigation teams and visitors have documented their encounters at Yorktown Memorial Hospital. For instance, the “Ghost Adventures” team captured clear EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) with phrases believed to be from “Stacy,” such as “You wanna play?” They also reported visual anomalies, including the appearance of a partial apparition on an infrared camera.
Paranormal Activity Rating: High (Frequent activity)
