Waverly Hills Sanatorium
⚰️ History & Backstory
Waverly Hills Sanatorium opened in 1910 as a small two-story hospital and expanded into a massive five-story facility in 1926. It was built to combat the devastating spread of tuberculosis, also known as “the White Plague,” which was one of the deadliest diseases of the early 20th century.
At its peak, thousands of patients were treated here using then-modern but often grim methods such as fresh air therapy, surgical lung removal, and experimental procedures. Due to the contagious nature of tuberculosis, patients were often isolated for long periods—sometimes until death.
One of the most infamous features is the “body chute” (also called the death tunnel), a long underground passage used to discreetly remove bodies so as not to lower patient morale.
The facility closed in 1961 as antibiotics made TB more treatable. It later reopened briefly as a geriatric center but shut down permanently in 1982. Since then, it has become one of America’s most notorious haunted locations.
