History: The Lizzie Borden House is infamous as the site of the 1892 unsolved double murder of Andrew and Abby Borden, Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother. Andrew Borden, a successful businessman, purchased the property in 1872 and remodeled it into a single-family residence for his wife Abby, and daughters Emma and Lizzie.
Despite his wealth, Andrew was known for his frugality, opting not to install modern amenities like indoor plumbing and electricity. On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby were found brutally murdered in their home.
Lizzie was tried and acquitted for the murders, and the case remains one of America’s most notorious unsolved mysteries. The house has since been transformed into a bed and breakfast, offering guests a chance to stay in the rooms where the tragic events occurred.
Hauntings: Visitors and staff have reported various paranormal activities within the Lizzie Borden House. Common experiences include unexplained noises, such as footsteps and voices, as well as sightings of apparitions believed to be Andrew and Abby Borden.
Some guests have felt sudden drops in temperature and feelings of unease, particularly in the rooms where the murders took place. The attic, once the maid’s quarters, is reputed to be especially active, with reports of children’s laughter and objects moving on their own.
Personal Experiences: In October 2024, Julie Jordan from People magazine, along with paranormal enthusiasts Liz Beedle and Emily Penke, spent a night at the Lizzie Borden House.
During their stay, they experienced unexplained phenomena, including flashing lights in response to questions and motion detectors being triggered without apparent cause. These occurrences reinforced the house’s reputation for paranormal activity. people.com
