Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum Official Website
History
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was originally constructed in the mid-1800s as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, intended to house patients suffering from mental illness during a period when psychiatric treatment was primitive and often brutal.
Construction began in 1858 using hand-cut stone and Gothic architecture inspired by the Kirkbride Plan — a system designed to provide mentally ill patients with sunlight, fresh air, and therapeutic surroundings.
The outbreak of the American Civil War interrupted construction, and Union soldiers occupied the facility during portions of the war. The hospital eventually opened fully in 1864.
Originally designed for approximately 250 patients, the asylum became catastrophically overcrowded during the 20th century. By the 1950s, the patient population reportedly exceeded 2,000 individuals.
Treatments included:
- Electroshock therapy
- Hydrotherapy
- Restraints
- Isolation confinement
- Lobotomies
Conditions deteriorated badly over time. Reports described:
- Abuse
- Neglect
- Unsanitary living conditions
- Violence between patients
- Understaffing
The institution finally closed in 1994.
Today, the massive structure operates as a historic site and one of America’s best-known paranormal destinations.

Common Reports

Famous Spirits & Paranormal Legends

Skeptics note there is limited historical evidence confirming Lily’s identity, but the story remains central to the asylum’s paranormal lore.

Violent Patient Spirits
Former violent wards are considered especially active. Witnesses describe:
- Aggressive unseen presences
- Scratches
- Growling noises
- Sudden nausea or dizziness
Paranormal teams frequently conduct overnight investigations in these sections.
