History
Hashima Island, commonly known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) due to its resemblance to a battleship, is an abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. The island was initially settled in 1887 when Mitsubishi developed it into a coal mining facility. At its peak in the 1950s, the island had a population of over 5,200 residents, making it one of the most densely populated places in the world at the time.
